Wedding Veil 101 – Our Interview with The Knot

When The Knot reached out to feature The French Wedding Veil in their guide to wedding veil styles and lengths, I said yes without hesitation. Veils are what I think about all day, every day, so getting to share that with brides beyond my own studio in Paris felt like a natural extension of the work.
The final piece, 11 Wedding Veil Styles & Veil Lengths From Shortest to Longest, walks brides through every veil length from birdcage to royal, with advice on matching a veil to a dress silhouette, a venue, and a season. I answered questions on all of it, and one line sums up the advice I give most often in my own consultations:
"The key is that the veil should complement the gown, not compete with it."

Both are handmade in our Paris atelier with Calais-Caudry lace, so seeing them recognised alongside designer names we admire meant a great deal.
A quick veil length refresher
If you want the short version of what we cover in the full interview, here is how the most common veil lengths break down, roughly measured from the top of the head:
- Birdcage, around 20 to 25 cm, sits just below the chin. See our birdcage veils.
- Fingertip, around 100 to 105 cm, grazes the fingertips when your arms rest at your sides. Our Pour Toujours veil is a fingertip length.
- Floor and chapel, from about 180 to 230 cm, brush or extend slightly past the floor. Our T'aimer veil comes in both.
- Cathedral, from about 290 cm and up, trails well beyond the gown for a dramatic, formal effect. Our Mon Amour and S'unir veils are both cathedral length.
- Mantilla, a lace veil worn without a comb-and-tulle base, traditionally framing the face and shoulders. See our mantilla veils.
